Daily Elder Greeting Card Generator, and the Kitsch of Elder Cards
This project really just started because I see elders in chat groups posting all kinds of odd greeting cards every day, and I couldn’t resist making something similar to play around with.
Putting it together nowadays is actually pretty simple—the word banks and corpora are readily available, and generating images is hardly a challenge for modern AI. The tricky part, I think, is really nailing the elder card style. On that front, I don’t feel I’ve found an approach I’m completely happy with yet.
Elder cards are inherently very kitschy. I don’t mean that in a bad way; it’s just that when someone posts one, it really just means “hello” or “good morning.” But if you try to take that simple “hello, good morning” and turn it into a formatted, batch-generable thing, it suddenly isn’t all that easy.
Seeing all the different styles out there makes it feel a lot like kids trading stickers—it’s just a matter of whether it looks neat or not. And that standard of what looks good only needs to be understood and accepted within the elder crowd.
That’s also why I think elder cards made by younger people always lack that genuine kitsch. The style and colors that the generation receiving these cards wants to see are entirely different from ours.
A closer analogy might be the traditional Spring Festival couplets you see on the streets. Except couplets come with a seasonal, festive theme, whereas elder cards have no creative constraints at all—they’re just a personal, creative way to say hi.
It’s like how talking about peace always brings lotus flowers, and wealth brings diamonds. The English doesn’t even have to be grammatically correct either. Most elder cards these days probably use AI to some degree, so the English isn’t terribly wrong, but when there are mistakes, it actually adds a certain handmade charm.
The casual greetings and blessings are the real essence of these cards. If I had to put it in terms the internet might better relate to, describing them as emotion-driven images with minimal information elements is probably the best way to capture what an elder card really is.
